Mazda’s Top Hybrid Cars In 2023

Mazda may not be the first brand name that springs to mind when you think of hybrid cars, but this Japan

ese automaker has been working hard to establish itself as a leader in the market. This year, Mazda is looking to cement its place in the hybrid car world with new models that offer cutting-edge performance, impressive fuel consumption figures, and luxurious features.

Mazda CX-60

Mazda's newly announced plug in hybrid CX-60 upper mid-size SUV is set to revolutionize its lineup. This redesigned model introduces the company's new 'Large Architecture' platform – a rear-wheel-drive, six-cylinder car not seen before from the car manufacturer. The CX-60 offers customers either an inline-six petrol engine or diesel engine, or the new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system. Whilst the 3.0L petrol engine and the 3.3L turbo diesel are paired with eight-speed multi-clutch automatic transmissions as well as new 48-volt mild-hybrid technology, it will be the PHEV that is sure to make the most waves.

And that's because of the vehicle's impressive numbers,

Offering 241kW and 500Nm of electric power courtesy of its combination of a 2.5L four-cylinder engine and electric motor, the CX-60  is capable of a 0-100km/h acceleration time of just 5.8 seconds. Mazda also claims an all-electric range of 60 kilometres, making it one of the most efficient PHEVs on the Australian market.

Step inside the CX-60 cabin and experience the next generation of in-car comfort. The centerpiece is a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, which features a Driver Personalisation System that uses facial recognition to remember your seating and steering wheel preferences. And that's not all--it's also equipped with wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, digital radio, satellite navigation, and much more. Plus, depending on the trim level you select, you can enjoy 10-way power-adjustable front seats that include heating and venting capabilities. And for those looking for a truly luxurious feel inside their CX-60 cabin, flagship models score nappa leather upholstery too.

Now available for pre-order, the Mazda CX-60 PHEV is set to be one of the most sought-after vehicles of 2023.

    Mazda CX-5

Australian motorists looking to switch to electric vehicles are eagerly awaiting news that the hybrid option for Mazda’s CX-50 will soon be available in the US. This provides hope for Australia's electric vehicle market, as the success of this model abroad could potentially make way for a hybrid CX-5 on our market too.

This is exciting news for those seeking improved fuel efficiency and a more eco-friendly automotive choice. However, exactly when this new feature will be available has not yet been released by the company. Mazda fans in Australia are eagerly awaiting the announcement of when the hybrid model of the CX-50 will be made available to them so they can upgrade their current or purchase a brand new SUV with hybrid capabilities.

The Mazda CX-5 has been a widely popular mid-size SUV in Australia for many years now, bolstered by its agility and style. However, it has fallen short of the Toyota RAV4 when it comes to sales in recent times due to not having a hybrid drivetrain available. With hybrids becoming ever more popular down under, this can be a major factor influencing buyers. Hybrids are well-loved in Australia due to their improved fuel economy and the instant torque available from their electric powertrains - something which can provide not just environmental benefits but also a smoother ride.

When you consider that 31.5% of all Toyotas sold in 2022 were hybrids, Mazda's decision to make a hybrid CX-5 available could be the key to reclaiming market share.

    Mazda MX-30

Mazda Australia recently expressed interest in bringing the innovative MX-30 e-SkyActiv R-EV, their first rotary-engined car in a decade, down under. However, due to other planned releases this year, the R-EV won't be available in local showrooms until 2024 at the earliest.

Priced around the $65k mark in the Uk, the Mazda MX-30, is equipped with a powerful electric motor that drives the front wheels. Having a maximum output of 125kW and 260Nm, the R-EV can achieve an estimated range of 85km on electric energy alone; however, once the battery is depleted, the engine will switch to a 50-litre fuel tank for additional power and extend the driving range over 600km.

Consuming 9.7L/100km of petrol, the MX-30 R-EV has a relatively high fuel consumption rate compared to its mild-hybrid version. Yet, it is worth noting that this is because of how the rotary engine powers the battery rather than directly driving the wheels. This means the MX-30 can charge its battery by either plugging it in or charging while on the road and only use fuel when needed. Compared to other hybrid vehicles, this should result in vastly improved fuel economy.

Next year promises to be a revolutionary one for Mazda Australia, as the MX-30 R-EV and hybrid CX-5 will provide a much needed boost to their model range. With these two vehicles making their debut, 2024 looks set to be an exciting year for motorists down under.

    Final thoughts

It's clear that hybrid cars are becoming increasingly popular in Australia and Mazda is making sure they keep up with the competition. The Mazda CX-60 PHEV, CX-50 Hybrid and MX-30 R-EV all offer vastly improved fuel economy over their petrol counterparts as well as providing a luxurious driving experience. No longer prohibitively priced, hybrid vehicles provide an affordable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional petrol or diesel vehicles.

The future of hybrid technology in Australia is certainly looking bright. In Mazda’s commitment to the cause, we can look forward to more efficient, cleaner motoring options becoming available in the not-so-distant future.
